Those of you interested in photography may find this to be pretty slick.
"Michael Yon is a former Green Beret, who has been reporting from Iraq and Afghanistan since December 2004." While photographing helicopters landing at night, he was seeing halos of light form around the rudder blades.
"Basically it is a result of static electricity created by friction as materials of dissimilar material strike against each other. In this case titanium/nickel blades moving through the air and dust. It occurs on the ground as well, but you don't usually see it as much unless the aircraft is landing or taking off."
Surprised to find out that there was no official name for this effect, he coined it the Kopp-Etchells Effect, named after two young soldiers who were killed in combat during his time stationed at that base.
