bg/ish: Welcome to Contra Costa, Land of Outlaws, Villains and Thieves!

I really got a kick out of this story on SFGate this morning about Contra Costa, CA District Attorney Robert Kochly's reaction to the city Board of Supervisors cutting $1.9 million from his office's budget. He's said that it will do "less with less", and has announced that his office will no longer prosecute some misdemeanor offenses such as burglary, shoplifting and reckless driving. Some drug offenses will also go unpunished.

Of course some city officials feel that this is an "open invitation" to criminals to come rape, pillage and plunder Contra Costa. Kochly and the Board are having a "showdown" today that will hopefully involve a lot of cold stares, finger pointing, and throat clearing.

I for one will be keeping a close eye on these developments, and looking to shoplift a PlayStation 3 from a store in Contra Costa with lax door security, and easy access to a freeway on-ramp.

bg/ish: Swine Flu is Coming For Your Ass - Eat Bacon

Apparently, unsatisfied with their drug cartels pouring tons and tons of illicit drugs into this country, the Mexican people have begun sweating some filthy swine flu out of their greasy pores in an effort to incite a pandemic outbreak on the west coast of the United States, wiping out the hard working American population and thus reclaiming the lush lands of California for Mexico.

Actually, I'm not sure that's what is happening at all. Good thing cnn.com, suckling the swine flu and propagating fear, has provided a Swine Flu FAQ for all of us to glean so much useful information from.

Oh! I have a question! Pick me! Pick me!

Q: Where did this swine flu come from? How did the outbreak occur in Mexico?

CNN: Researchers do not know yet know. People usually get swine flu from infected pigs. For example, farmers handling infected pigs can contract the virus. However, some human cases have occurred without contact with pigs or places they inhabited.

Oh. Great. I'm glad you could answer that question for me!

In reality, the swine flu outbreak has it's roots in the failure of the free market capitalist system as much as say, our failing economy. Yes, it's all going to shit. Literally.

Mike Davis, in his article, Capitalism and the Flu, helps us understand how this flu, which was likely "conceived in the fecal mire of an industrial pigsty", is really just another lovely byproduct of a global system that allows "3 billion people [to] live on less than $2 a day, [while] Wall Street "winners" are getting billion-dollar paydays".

We really need to look no further than "the corporate industrialization of livestock production" to understand how something like this can happen. Davis goes on to say:

"In 1965, for instance, there were 53 million American hogs on more than 1 million farms; today, 65 million hogs are concentrated in 65,000 facilities--half with more than 5,000 animals.

This has been a transition, in essence, from old-fashioned pig pens to vast excremental hells, unprecedented in nature, containing tens, even hundreds of thousands of animals with weakened immune systems, suffocating in heat and manure, while exchanging pathogens at blinding velocity with their fellow inmates and pathetic progenies.

Anyone who has ever driven through Tar Heel, N.C., or Milford, Utah--where Smithfield Foods subsidiaries each annually produce more than 1 million pigs as well as hundreds of lagoons full of toxic shit--will intuitively understand how profoundly agribusiness has meddled with the laws of nature."

Davis mentions Smithfield Foods and their subsidiaries specifically because there is already talk in foreign press, specifically Mexico, that the epicenter for this flu is a Smithfield subsidiary farm in Veracruz. This link to Smithfield has been casually omitted from 'respected' news sources here in the US, including our beloved CNN.

As Smith concludes, "what matters more is the larger configuration: the WHO's failed pandemic strategy, the further decline of world public health, the stranglehold of Big Pharma over lifeline medicines, and the planetary catastrophe of industrialized and ecologically unhinged livestock production."

So what? Well, besides putting my order for a Woolly Pig on hold, it means that until people start to realize that many of these incidents are intertwined into a mass free market system that is failing on the national and global level, they will continue to be at the mercy of the filthy Mexicans and their swine flu.

Come on, I'm kidding about the Mexicans. Afterall, it's Monday, and nobody really wants to take their news seriously on a Monday...

UPDATE:

There is also a line of thinking that is willing to let capitalism off the hook for this one. I suppose I'm a bit of a crackpot, yet I'd be remiss if I didn't present both sides of the coin. Spotted at boingboing.net:

"Pigs seem to provide a particularly good environment for flu viruses to get their gene-reassorting watusi on. But to get that pig/avian/human mix, the most likely candidate would be a pig who'd had close contact with both people and poultry. As I understand it, it's less likely that a human who works with pigs and chickens separately could pass the avian virus to a pig. And, factory farms, which tend to be single-species outfits, aren't really great places for pigs and chickens to interact.
Now, I can see some ways around that. Say, if the pigs were sleeping or wallowing in muck that was contaminated with chicken feces or something. I could also be interpreting the facts incorrectly here. But from what I've read, and from the researchers I've spoken with, it seems more likely that H1N1 would have been created in the communal barn of a small farm, than in a giant hog-only factory farm shed."

bg/ish: Crabtree To The 49ers

We got our man. Well, at least, we got the kid I'd hoped for. Michael Crabtree was drafted at #10 by the 49ers today. The two time All-American brings speed and elusiveness to our fairly nondescript receiving corps. So far, he's saying all the right things. This pick instills some confidence in me for the team this year. Ideally I'd like to see former #1 overall pick Alex Smith win the starting job back and rejuvinate his career under Coach Singletary, and with Crabtree and Vernon Davis at his disposal he should have some legitimate threats to help the passing game move the ball down the field.

bg/ish: "I've got a bad feeling about this."

I've had trouble coming up with catchy titles for these posts as of late. You'll notice this week I haven't come up with anything at all really. Let's call it a practice in simplicity. For some strange reason I meant to explain but really had no explanation for, last week I used a couple of Han Solo quotes that were essentially unrelated to the posts they headed. I'm back to using a Han Solo quote again, only this time, I really do have a bad feeling about something...

Perhaps I should have entitled this post, "What an incredible smell you've discovered!" Ah, let me just get to the point already.

I started work on a post about things I wanted to do this summer (Bay to Breakers, Socialism 2009, Comic-Con 2009) and was gathering up links and info when I came across this information...

...ya that's right. Sold Out.

I'm so confused. I thought it was only April. I thought we were in an economic recession. I thought I wanted to go to Comic-Con this year. Well, not on a Thursday or a Sunday... clearly nobody gives a fuck to go then.

So, it looks like no summer trip to San Diego (German for "a whales vagina") for me, your boy bg. No running wildly through the streets. No casting aside of parking tickets. No leg numbing search for swag. No fanboy gawking at scantily clad womenses. No bus ride tangentialism. No sanskrit. No pigeons. No fajitas. No, none of this, for Comic-Con is sold out. (on the only days that matter)

It's not a stretch to say that I'm offended by this concept of a "sold out" Comic-Con. I'm fucking quite seriously offended. I thought waiting in a twisted, nonsensical line of people that stretched into Tiajuana for 4 hours to get in was pretty much as bad as it could get. That was Chinese Torture #47, until it's recent omission from the list, but at least you got into the filthy Con! Has Comic-Con become too good for walk-ups!?

Ah, but it was only a matter of time! There's been a cloud of smug brewing down there for years! Filthy fucking fanboys! "Damn yous! Goddamn yous all ta hell!"

Not that I'm bitter or anything.

So my apologies ag. Last year I dropped the ball and waited too long. This year the ball was dropped on me.

Meh...

bg/ish: Earth Day

In case you've missed it on just about any news outlet available to mankind, today is Earth Day. What is Earth you ask, and why does it deserve it's own day?

Well, this is Earth...

...and it happens to be where we all live, so it's slightly important. Trust me, your apartment wouldn't be the same without it. On a side note, 'Earth' is one of those words that the more you look at it, the stranger it gets. Go ahead...

Earth

Earth

Earth

Earth

Earth

...weird right? Unless that's just me. One might wonder, where did this lovely planet we live on get a name like "Earth"? Well, according to wikipedia, "The name "Earth" was derived from the Anglo-Saxon word erda, which means ground or soil. It became eorthe in Old English, then erthe in Middle English."

"Earth has often been personified as a deity, in particular a goddess. In many cultures the mother goddess, also called the Mother Earth, is also portrayed as a fertility deity."

Our Mother has certainly been good to us the last few days here in San Francisco. Record heat has brought out the shorts, tanks, and the skin. Your boy bg has been rolling shirtless for the better part of 4 days. (avert your eyes!) People have been flocking to Dolores Park and staying until well after dark. Last night at around 9:30 a random dance party broke out when this guy showed up with about 20-30 other cyclists in tow. Of course, he was pumping out the usual Prince/Michael Jackson/Madonna tunes that he usually has on blast. Keep reppin' Deep!

Ran into my buddy Steve who is the man behind fluxlife and discussed some of his latest ventures and ideas. We've been meaning to link our blogs up here for a while, so you'll now find fluxlife to the right in our blog list. Cuz "sometimes life flux".

Mother Nature has, in fact, been so good to us recently, that last night was really some twisted extension of a weekend that never really ended. I for one, am exhausted. After spending all day Saturday and Sunday outdoors, at the park, taking in sun and booze, Monday conspired to be 4/20 which essentially left me useless at work and after. Throw in an identical Tuesday run complete with lethal cocktail of sun/ganja/hash/booze and it's no surprise I could barely drag my ass out of bed this morning. Surely I was disappointed to find out that Earth Day is not a national holiday, and I was expected to be in the office.

Here's the rub though...

Earth has been good to us, but we haven't been so good to her. I mean, come on people, record heat in April?!? Let's not forget that we've still got a long way to go to reverse the ruinous trends of past generations and start to build a better, brighter, and for lack of a better term, greener future for this floating rock we call home. Get involved if you feel so inclined...

...or just recline on the grass at the park and chug a few beers. I'll be there.
bg/ish: Zerofriends

No, the title of this post is not a reference to my social life, but rather, a creative collective that we've come across at WonderCon and A.P.E. I was reminded of Zerofriends and the art of Alex Pardee by a recent post at Laughing Squid talking about his newly released print, The Delusionist.

Alex has some interesting takes on the bg/ag fav, Batmaing... er, Batman.

The Real Batman

"BATMAN (yah, your favorite masked detective) was originally an ancient mythical cult being whose story was basically about a bat hunter who, in a fit of symbiotic revenge rage, captured the bat that killed his wife and, since he couldnt live without his wife, he wanted to show the bat what it was like to depend on someone else for life and love. So the hunter shoved the Bat onto his head like a mask and forced the bat to remain a part of him. Shortly after, the tables turned and the hunter's foolish attempt at revenge backfired when he suffocated and died. The bat then took over the hunter's body and used his new found appendages and abilities to lead warriors to kill weak people because it was fun. True story."

Tonight, To Knight

"To honor one of my favorite Super Heroes, I asked the now-ridiculously-popular-because-of-his-new-movie-which-may-be-one-of-my-favorite-movies-of-all-time, elusive hero to take some time to sit for me while I painted his portrait. He obliged, but what do you know, during the sitting, who decided to parachute in? A handful of Supervillains that WE BOTH THOUGHT WERE LOCKED UP OR DEAD!! But I guess that's the life of Batman. (Sighhh)."

So sick.

The first showreel for the SprintCam v3. Pretty sick. Or, as I was told, "all cheerleading should be done at 1000 FPS". No doubt.

Blow this one up to full screen and take in the HD goodness.

bg/ish: Fine Dining

Some foods don't necessarily sound like they go together. Chicken and waffles come to mind. But we all know what happens when you doubt "chicken & waffles", Roscoe's comes along to pwn your ASS son. You think, "I'm never eating chicken and waffles", but you can't help it, cuz the truth is dey run tings!

In light of that, my dinner last night was off the heezy, for sheezy, and it was cheesy, neezy...

bg/ish: Weekend Recap - Flying Lotus, KODE9, The Bug @ Mighty

welcome back kiddies...

it's been a pretty hectic month of April so far for me. i swear 2009 is flying by so fast i can barely keep up. lots of ins, lots of outs, and a lot of what have yous... at any rate, i finally got out to club Mighty this weekend and took in a pretty fresh DJ set from the likes of Flying Lotus, KODE9, and The Bug.

up first was The Bug, and although his "futuristic" mixing techniques got a little bit tiresome, his set was banging from start to finish. "working your core like a bunch of situps!" he worked the crowd into a mild frenzy and then killed us all with a Poison Dart... so sick. seriously, this track fucking kills!

up after The Bug was KODE9, founder of Hyperdub Records, and one of the illest dubstep DJs out. he spun some straightforward, heavy, dirty dubstep beats. you could feel it in your chest. ya boy! you can check him out on MySpace here.

Headlining the show was Flying Lotus, producer, California native and member of the extended Coltrane family. his set was mindblowing in all honesty. i can't really find any live footage that does it justice, but this video from late last year gives you a good idea of his style and technique. "it's... magnificent."

in the end it was a sick night of dancing to some deep dubstep grooves, and it barely managed to justify the $20 cover charge. hah. i'm still a cheap bastard.

bumbaclot!

bg/ish: "Keep your distance...but don't look like you're trying to keeping your distance."

Few things in this world are as horribly demented and evil as the Snuggie. We are truly living in the last days, spoke of in the book of Revelation, where the Lord hath sayeth to John, "Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and those who weareth the Snuggie, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie."

Yea verily, my eyes have seen and beheldeth something far more disturbing over at Craftastrophe, the butt f***ing, filthy ass Peekaru.

* shudder *

Now, cleanse your soul with this video.

bg/ish: "Besides, I know a few maneuvers."

If ever an event were made for bg/ag publishing, it would be this, the Rental Car Rally, which this year runs from San Francisco, CA to Yuma, AZ, a 650 mile course. Say it with me now... "sweeeet".

The Rental Car Rally is a "single leg competitive road trip starting in San Francisco and ending in Yuma, AZ. There is no set route, but each team must hit pre-defined checkpoints, the locations of which will be provided in the rally booklet given to each team at the starting line. Each team must provide photographic evidence of each checkpoint. No photos = disqualification. Each team is scored by a combination of odometer reading, team style, and hijinks". And yes, as the name implies, it requires a rental car. Better get the insurance, ifyouknowwhatimsayin.

Cost of entry is $250 per team, which includes "admission to the rally, the rally provisions bag for your team (the rally booklet w/ rules and coordinates for checkpoints, the rally contact sheet w/ info on other drivers, two mix CDs, energy drinks, condoms, cigarettes, beef jerky), the May 13th party and drink specials, the party in Yuma, the chance to win one of 12 Flip Video cameras, and the the rally prizes."

I've come up with a fool proof plan that involves ag selling his body to pay for our team. He'll be on board or he'll die! (In which case he'd be replaced by chair, to whom the responsibility to defile one's body for money would then pass.) But let's not sweat the details right now.

agIsh: Loss For Words

Holy ish, this is so awesome! I've had an animated GIF of a dancing bear on my computer for the longest time and never really bothered looking for the original source. Boredom got the best of me and a couple of searches led me to the keywords "breakdancing bear" and eventually led me to this video.

I found him! It's actually a decent song accompanied by a rather entertaining video. Enjoy!

When one thinks of Spring Break, one thinks of beer bongs, gratuitous nudity, and promiscuous sex (in that order). When you're a graduate student, however, Spring Break means more time for more lab work! Booyah! :'(

These guys gave me a good laugh when I needed it so I'm sharing it with you.
